The Parish Priest, Father Michael Turner, provides leadership to the Parish in practical as well as spiritual matters. He is assisted in that task by a range of Parish groups and organisations.
The Parish Finance Committee
The Finance Committee supports the Parish priest in managing the finances of St Peters , helping to safeguard and manage the Church’s resources – both financial and physical.
Their role includes maintaining oversight of the Parish income and expenditure and the balances in the accounts.
The upkeep of Parish property – the Church, the Halls and other property within our site in St Peters Street – is another important part of its role. The Committee oversees the regular inspection of all the buildings and manages a programme of maintenance. It also has responsibility for the letting of the Parish facilities – the Halls and the car parking to outside organisations.
The Finance Committee was established 10 years ago. The Chairman for most of that period was the late John Davies. The Parish owes him a great debt of gratitude for his firm and decisive chairmanship. His successor is John Appleton.

The Committee is drawn from a broad range of professional backgrounds to ensure that it has a spread of experience to help the Parish Priest.
Serving on the Altar at Mass offers the boys and girls of the Parish an opportunity to play and important role in the life of the church and of St Peter’s School. St Peter’s Church is lucky to have a few altar servers at this time. We do, however, need new recruits every year to replace those who have moved on: servers must have taken First Communion. We would also be very pleased to accept any adult volunteers. Training will be provided. When servers have completed a year on the altar, they become eligible for membership of the Archconfraternity of St Stephen. New members are enrolled each year on the Feast of St Stephen (Boxing Day).
Please note we do not currently have altar servers at masses because of the current regulations.

The importance of the laity is underlined by team of lay readers who on Sundays and important feast days have responsibility for delivering the sacred scripture from the altar. To maintain an 8-week rota, St Peters needs a core of at least 40 volunteers, able and willing to read the epistles and bidding prayers, clearly and with comprehension – not so onerous in age when most churches are equipped with a public address system.

The Church Choir has around a dozen regular members, although it is largely suspended at present due to COVID-19. The Choir has two roles: one is to enhance the liturgy with fine music, the other is to encourage the congregation to join in. The Choir is always on the lookout for new members. Practice takes place each week before 11 o’clock Mass. Aside from Sundays (11am mass) and feast days, the Choir also performs on request at special occasions such as weddings.

It is important now more than ever to have a clean church. Cleanliness is Godliness! Maintaining a clean and tidy space allows our parish to feel welcome and to connect to God. Our church is hoovered weekly on Sunday evenings by one cleaning team. Our church is mopped, cleaned, dusted, and polished weekly on Mondays by another cleaning team. We have ad hoc cleaning volunteers helping out where they can. Cleaning our church is a real blessing and takes dedication and hard work. Well done to all involved!

Collectors & Counters
We need Collectors to take the collection at each of the three Sunday Masses and also counters to ensure that the amounts collected are properly counted and recorded.
Instruction for First Holy Communion and Confirmation
Most of our young Parishioners received instruction for their First Holy Communion and Confirmation in St Peters School. But the Parish also makes special provision for children who attend other schools. Our catechist, Penny Bedingfield, instructs classes in the Pugin Rooms on Saturday each week to prepare them for the Sacraments. The aim of the classes is to ensure that all children enjoy and understand what our faith is about, using the word of God to inspire confidence and trust in the church and its teaching.

Saint Vincent de Paul Society: The SVP
The St Vincent de Paul Society is an international Christian voluntary organisation dedicated to tackling poverty and disadvantage by providing practical assistance to those in need – irrespective of ideology, faith, ethnicity, age or gender. It is based on local ‘conferences’, groups organized at Parish level. The Marlow Conference was established over 50 years ago with the specific aim of supporting Catholic boys detained in the Finnamore Wood Young Offenders Prison. That institution closed over 20 years ago but the members of the St Peters SVP group continue to work as volunteers, visiting people in their homes, residential homes, hospitals and hospices. Members regularly meet together, remembering Christ’s words: “When two or more meet together in my name, there am I in the midst of them”. Meetings are short, focussing on seeking out those in need, whether it is the housebound, the sick or those just having a difficult time. Nationally there is an expanding programme of Community Shops, not on lucrative high streets, but on housing estates, providing low income families with affordable clothing and furniture. The SVP visit prisons, hospitals and residential homes and run family support centres, offering debt advice and counselling. Camps are organised for children who would not otherwise have a holiday and a limited number of family holidays.
The Twinning programme links conferences in England and Wales to India, the Sudan, Grenada, Guyana and Romania. In the Sudan the baby feeding programme provides meals for 10,000 children every day.
Several annual highlights for the Marlow conference, formed in 1965, are organising a winter lunch for senior citizens, a drive in spring to see the bluebells followed by tea, and the annual Parish Outing.

Trans World Aid –The TWA
The TWA was born 30(?) years ago in response to a speculative appeal from an English (?) priest working out of a Mission (?) in Ethiopia. He wanted to know if our Parish would be prepared to help raise money to give economic support the community he served. A group of women within the Parish responded instantly by organising ???????. The event raised xxxxx.
The direct contact with Ethiopia meant the group could be sure that every penny they raised went directly to the cause and that, in an area of severe economic deprivation, the benefits of their contribution would be proportionately greater. The decision was taken to turn the one-off fund-raising event into a permanent campaign channelling money to economically deprived regions via church organisations on the spot. In the xxxx years since, the TWA has raised over yyyyyy pounds – much of which has come from the sale of home-made produce prepared by the group’s own members.
Another major fund-raising activity is the series of Lenten lunches held each year on the seven Fridays of Lent. The active members of group includes not only St Peters parishioners but other concerned supporters from Marlow from a variety of different religious backgrounds.

Churches Together in Marlow
St Peters is, with eight other local Christian churches, a member of Churches Together in Marlow (CTiM). CTiM encourages ecumenism and it works to promote fellowship and Christianity in Marlow. It is affiliated to Churches Together in Buckinghamshire and thus to the nationwide Churches Together movement.
Under its auspices, the church leaders in Marlow meet regularly. The committee of CTiM, comprised of representatives of each of the member churches, meets quarterly and organizes a number of functions, notably in Church Unity Week in January each year when there are joint prayer groups, joint services in churches and a Unity Supper held in St Peters School. There are further joint services during Holy Week and at Easter itself before which there are Lenten Study Groups held. Good Friday is marked by a service held at Christ Church United Reformed Church, followed by a walk of silent witness along West Street then High Street to Higginson Park, where a further service is held. Social occasions held during the year include Pancake Day lunch and a Harvest Supper.
Where funds are raised either at social occasions or at Joint Service collections they are disbursed to appropriate charities selected.
In addition CTiM organises the annual Christian Aid Week House to House Collection and supports the local Lighthouse event held each summer at Holy Trinity School providing a week of activities with a Christian accent for young children. Many parishioners of the local churches give their time to help during the week as do older students from the local schools.

The Catenian Association
The Catenian Association, a Catholic men’s society, was formed in Manchester in 1908; its purpose was to promote fellowship and social intercourse between Catholic families. The second group of members came together in London in 1909 and the organisation has since spread nationwide and to various overseas countries notably Australia and Zimbabwe but also Goa and Malta. It is comprised of over 10,000 members spread over more than 300 Circles, divided into Provinces and with an overall Grand Council.
There is no Catenian Circle in Marlow itself but there are Circles in Maidenhead and High Wycombe (South Buckinghamshire) and parishioners from Marlow are welcome at both. Each Circle organises social functions throughout the year and these are often attended by visitors from other Circles. There are Provincial functions and a National Conference each year.
Each Circle President, who holds office for a year, chooses a particular charity to benefit from funds raised at social functions during his period of office.
